The first of four Korn Ferry Finals events begins next week. The top 156 in points from this year’s points list are eligible for the field. A considerable change this year is that the field will not go deeper than 156th to fill the field (there are no alternates). So if five players from the top 156 don't play in Boise next week, the field will be 151. On Monday, I will provide a full breakdown of what is at stake at the four KFT finals.
With that in mind, here is a quick article about the players fighting to get into the top 156 this weekend, the players resigned to scoreboard watching after missing the cut, and some recognizable names who missed the cut and are headed back to Q-school.
These players are outside the top 156, but they made the cut and have a chance to play their way into the first KFT finals event.
Will Chandler T2
Currently 134th in points
Projected 62nd
The former University of Georgia grad is not a KFT member, but has Monday Q'd four times this year and earned enough points to get into this week's field. To say he is taking advantage would be an understatement. He has a spot in Boise locked up, but a big weekend could lead to career-changing circumstances.
Ryan Armour T9
Currently 180th
Projected 139th
The former PGA Tour winner has played just four KFT events this season, making two cuts. He is be turning 49 next year and will have status on KFT regardless, but a good finish this weekend will give him at least one more start in 2023.
Dawson Armstrong T13
Currently 155th
Projected 130th
Armstrong is a veteran of 108 career KFT starts and has made five of 18 cuts coming into this week. A solid start to this week has, for the time being, gotten him off the 156 bubble. However, he needs to play solid to maintain that, and with a good weekend, he has a chance to secure at least two more starts.
Daniel Miernicki T22
Currently 159th
Projected 143rd
The player with the oddest swing in golf is a long-time grinder and has played 82 career KFT events. This season, he has made seven of 14 cuts after finishing 85th in points last season. The former Oregon Duck star looks for a solid weekend to keep this season alive.
Chris Petefish T32
Currently 161st
Projected 143rd
This season has been a struggle after Petefish's breakout season last year, which had him in the running for one of the 30 PGA Tour cards late in 2023. He ended up 45th in points. This season, the former Georgia Tech standout has made five of 20 cuts and finds himself on the outside looking in.
Mason Williams T32
Currently 160th
Projected 150th
Williams made just one cut in two starts this year, but he took advantage of his made cut in April, finishing T9 after Monday qualifying. Although not a KFT member, that finish earned him a start in this week's final regular season event. He now has a chance to earn at least one more start if he can finish in the top 156.
These players are around the 156 bubble and missed the cut this week. For the next two days, this group will do a lot of refreshing to see if they get a tee time in Boise.
Billy Kennerly
Currently 153rd
Projected 157th
The former Clemson standout will have some medical starts to fall back on if necessary for next season, but his weekend plans will probably include a lot of leaderboard-watching
John Augenstein
Currently 149th
Projected 153rd
The 2019 U.S. Amateur runner-up opened with a 69 this week but struggled to a 75 Friday, missing the cut by three.
Kyle Stanley
Currently 153rd
Projected 158th
It seems like yesterday that Stanley won twice on the PGA Tour, but he has struggled lately. This season, he made just four of 19 cuts on the KFT and will have to wait to see if he gets a spot in Boise.
Bryson Nimmer
Currently 151st
Projected 156th
Two weeks ago, Nimmer Monday Q'd and finished T11 in Chicago to earn enough points to get into this week's field. After opening with a 69 on Thursday, Nimmer birdied the first two holes Friday but then struggled to a 76 to miss the cut. The former Clemson Tiger will spend a lot of time looking at the projected points this weekend.
Dawie van der Walt
Currently 154th
Projected 159th
The long-time veteran has little chance of staying in the top 156, but with 76 players making the cut, there is a small chance he will be headed to Boise on Monday.
These players missed the cut and will not finish in the top 156, ending their season. For most, that means going back to the first stage of Q-school.
Connor Howe- This game can be so cruel at times. Howe missed a 10-foot putt on the last, which would have given him Saturday tee time. Currently 156th in points, Howe will fall out of the field for next week.
Sam Saunders (Iced Tea)- Saunders has battled injuries for years and made just four cuts in 18 starts this season.
Grant Hirschman- The former Oklahoma standout came into the week 179th in points and missed the cut.
Jared Wolfe- The two-time KFT winner will still have conditional status based on his last win but he came into the week 170th in points.
