The most important, pressure filled shot in golf last week, came with almost no one watching. It wasn't on TV and there weren't any tweets about it. But it likely saved a career. Joe Weiler came into last weeks KFT event 98th in points. The top 100 moved on to the third week of KFT finals, more importantly, getting into that event meant you had at least conditional KFT status for 2027. Finish outside the top 100 and its back to first stage and no status. Miss at Q-school and its either mini-tours or the end of the road. After a bad double on his 14th hole and another bad bogey on the next Weiler was one outside the cut. Miss the cut and he was projected to finish 101st. This is Weiler's fourth full season on KFT, the last two he has easily kept his card. And last year he married his longtime girlfriend Sophie. He hadn't made a decision about what would happen if he lost status, but mini-tour life at 29 seemed out of the question. I asked him if he felt like his career was on the line those last 4 holes Friday. His answer was short, honest, and perfect. "Its all I could really think about." On the par three 8th (his 17th) the pin was tucked on the front of the green, just a few paces from the water guarding the green. Weiler hit it to 9 feet. Joe told me it was the most nerves hes ever felt over a putt. Joe's parents, his father in law, and "a couple more people who had no idea what was happening" were the only people around the green. The downhill putt dropped for birdie. He parred 18 to make the cut on the number. Career saved, season saved, and at least some status for next season locked up. His dad told me "Its incredible to watch careers come down to one shot, one putt, one stroke over an entire season. I'm very proud of Joe for his grit." Weiler shot 66-70 on the weekend and moved up to 94th in points. He will need a great week to get into the top 60 and secure full status, but any move upwards in points helps improve his conditional status for next season. And that is the golf people don't see on TV.

Non golf tweet. But one of my most important tweets I’ve put out. A follower who has become a good friend has a son who has gone thru a shit storm over the last month. And he needs our help. Kettler is a Navy Officer and in mid August he had an allergic reaction to something. At first the doctors thought it was something minor and sent him home with Antibiotics. Just a few days later he woke up in severe pain, and was sent to the ER, they realized he was in great danger and sent immediately in an ambulance to the burn unit at Loyola. His skin was literally burning off his body from the allergenic reaction. He was admitted to ICU and diagnosed with Steven Johnson Syndrome. His case was so severe that it was nearly fatal. All of which came from the Antibiotics prescribed in the first visit. Kettles dad Skip has left his job to come care for him and the family is renting an Airbnb. Kettler is out of the hospital but can barely open his eyes and his recovery will be a long term process. Skip is staying in Chicago area to transfer him back and forth to rehab and help with every day activities. Kettler is not allowed back on base per doctors orders. On top of that there is a dispute about who is responsible for the medical bills and as of right now the family might be on the hook for them. Kettler is devastated that his Navy career could possible be over. He wanted so badly to follow in his grandfathers footsteps who was in the navy for 32 years. Help if you can.
