Griffin Wood shot 6-under at Waterchase Golf Club on Monday and survived a 5-for-2 playoff to make it into his first Korn Ferry Tour event. Wood, 34, has only played six PGA Tour-sanctioned events in his career and made two cuts, all on PGA Tour Canada. His maiden KFT voyage has been smooth sailing so far this week – Griffin opened with 7-under 64 and then scorched Texas Rangers Golf Course in Round 2 with an 11-under 60. His two round total of 18-under par is one better than Frankie Capan III, who opened the tournament with a course record 58. Capan has two holes to play in Round 2, which will resume Saturday morning.

Wood is an Indiana native and turned pro 10 years ago after playing college golf at the University of Evansville. He’s a long-hitting Phoenix resident without any Tour status and has played regularly on the Asher Tour this season, earning just under $10,000. Last year’s Veritex Bank Championship was won by Monday qualifier Spencer Levin and Wood will try to follow in Levin’s footsteps this weekend.

They’re taking it deep in Dallas: the current cutline is 7-under. Here are some of the other Monday qualifiers above the cutline:

Matt Atkins has been in four Monday Q playoffs this year and joined the Monday Q Review podcast after surviving the same 5-for-2 playoff that Wood advanced through. Atkins completed 10 holes in his second round and sits T30, 9-under for the event.

Hunter Eichhorn Monday qualified into this event last year and opened with 66-69 before an uninspiring weekend left him T60. On Thursday, he opened with a 64 but slowed down in Round 2. Through 27 holes, he straddles the cutline at 7-under.

Monday qualifiers Will Chandler, Sean Walsh, Carl Fosaas and Dylan Meyer are outside the cutline but with holes to play in Round 2. David Bradshaw finished at 2-under through two rounds.

Other weekend storylines to watch:

Callum Tarren and David Skinns are T5 and one back of the leaders at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. The English lads shot 63 in the best ball format and 69 in alternate shot in Round 2. Tarren is coming off a T23, his best performance of the season at last week’s Corales Puntacana Classic. Skinns has two top-10 finishes this season.

At the LPGA Tour’s JM Eagle LA Classic, both Monday qualifiers made the cut. Jennifer Chang and Cydney Clanton are 1-over through two rounds at Wilshire Country Club, 13 shots behind leader Grace Kim.

KFT story update after completion of Round 2: Monday Q's are making moves. Atkins ran off 5 birdies to move from T30 to T5. Will Chandler Shot 30 on the back 9, moving to T14. Dylan Meyer made 3 birdies and an eagle to make the cut on the number. Eichhorn closed in 30 on his back 9 moving from the cutline to T7, and Carl Fosaas birdied the last to make the cut on the number.
