Race to the U.S. Open: Rockville, Md.

Host course

The North Course at Woodmont Country Club played host to the 2020 U.S. Women’s Amateur, and Rose Zhang defeated Gabriela Ruffles in a thrilling 38-hole final match. The course can be stretched to 7,390 yards, and following a 2020 renovation for the Women’s Am, places a premium on approach angles. Last year, Joseph Bramlett captured medalist honors by two strokes with a 36-hole total of 8 under, and the final qualifying spots came in at 3 under.

Players in the field: 60

Spots available: For the same size field at the same site, four spots were available last year.

Most decorated player in the field

Marc Leishman: The Aussie is by far the most accomplished player in the field, as a former Presidents Cup International Team member and a six-time PGA Tour winner. Leishman now plays for LIV Golf’s Ripper GC. As the saber-rattling continues between professional tours, Leishman will try to bolster LIV’s hopes for standout finishes in the majors.

Storylines

Joseph Bramlett: He has two top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour this season and has made 15 of 21 cuts. He’ll try to build on those steady results by again capturing medalist honors at Woodmont CC.

Young Joo: Joo is the PGA director of instruction at Topgolf Loudoun in northern Virginia. He has competed four times in the PGA Professional Championship, each time preparing for the event primarily from the confines of his entertainment facility. Joo gets to hit plenty of balls but works on his putting on cement around empty bays before Topgolf customers arrive. He lost in a playoff to advance to the PGA Championship in 2017 and narrowly missed earning a spot in the field in 2021.

Ben Kohles: Kohles has spent most of his career on the Korn Ferry Tour, but that’s about to change. He has won twice this season and holds the fifth spot on the season-long points list. This wouldn’t be his first time qualifying for the U.S. Open. He made his debut in the 2017 Open at Erin Hills but missed the cut.

Zack Fischer: This guy brings his best to qualifiers. Fischer, 33, is the only player to win the Korn Ferry Tour Q School final stage twice.

Grayson Murray: A PGA Tour winner, Murray won on the Korn Ferry Tour two weeks ago at the AdventHealth Championship. He finished second behind Bramlett last year at this site and will look to ride his recent success to earn a tee time at L.A. Country Club.

Notables: Trevor Cone, Sebastian Munoz, Kevin Roy, Tom Lovelady
